Maroon 5 Talks About Topping the Hot 100

1000 No. 1s Video Series Day 22:
Maroon 5 Talks About Topping the Hot 100

2011 was the year that Billboard celebrated the 1000th No. 1 song on the Hot 100. As we look back on this year in music, we're celebrating that milestone with a month-long series of videos --- one for each day of December -- chatting with 31 of the hitmakers who rocketed to the top of the chart since its inception in 1958. SEE THE FULL CHART HERE.

On day 22 of our 1,000 Hot No. 1s video series, we move from yesterday's trio of Gloria Estefan ballads -- "Anything For You," "Don't Wanna Lose You" and "Coming Out Of The Dark" -- to more recent mid-tempo pop rock hits we chat with Maroon 5 about their No. 1s, "Makes Me Wonder" and "Moves Like Jagger." "I didn't care about 'Makes Me Wonder.' I didn't think it was going to be a huge hit," Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine says of the song that ruled the top for three week beginning May 12, 2007. But the moment it hit the top, he recalls, was very memorable. "I remember exactly where we were; doing a concert at a small club and our manager came over and said, 'Congratulations. . .' We were all just blown away."

Just over four years later, Maroon 5 (with some help from Christina Aguilera) beat their own record when "Moves Like Jagger" rocked No. 1 for four weeks beginning Sept. 10, 2011. "It was definitely a risk," Levine says. "I'm just happy that everyone likes it."

Be sure to come back tomorrow (Dec. 23) for the next 1000 No. 1s video: T.I. talks about his No. 1s, "Live Your Life" and "Whatever You Like."

June: Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera team up for "Moves Like Jagger"

What do you do when your third album stalls on the charts and you need to kick-start sales? The same thing you do when your fourth album stalls on the charts and you need a sales boost: Pair with an equally struggling pop artist to record one of the most annoyinglycatchy songs of the year. At least, that's what Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera did with "Moves Like Jagger," the inescapable song of all songs this year. At the time, the solution to a stalled charting for Maroon 5's new album, Hands All Over, which lacked a radio-ready single, was all too obvious: Throw Adam Levine on The Voice as one of four judges in a format that was a bit like American Idol, a bit like Blind Date, and watch sales soar. Well, that didn't happen. But the second-best thing did, as Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera teamed up for this ode to Mick Jagger's hips. Despite predictions, "Moves Like Jagger" eventually garnered a number-one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and is number nine on Billboard's year-end Hot 100 chart.

Result: Levine and Aguilera's contracts for The Voice are renewed, and Jagger hysteria sweeps the world. Overseas, Cher Lloyd releases a song called "Swagger Jagger," and Stateside, will.i.am gets the Jagger man himself to guest on a crappy hip-pop track called"T.H.E. (The Hardest Ever)," which also features Jennifer Lopez. Gee, thanks, Adam and Xtina.

Adam Levine-he of Maroon 5The Voice, "Moves Like Jagger" and "Stereo Hearts" fame- loves karaoke. He is not a kloseted karaoker. In fact, he's out and proud and stands 100 percent behind Soulo, an iPad karaoke app that can help karaoke fanatics and aspiring singers hone their skills. When you can sing falsetto like Levine, it's no wonder you're a fan of karaoke.

The Soulo App and microphone provides iPad users with a personalized, sophisticated yet easy-to-use, home karaoke experience. There's a real-time pitch-enhancement key, 10 free tracks, with the ability to purchase more via iTunes, voice effects such as echo and reverb and the ability so share videos via social networking platforms. Those are some features, right?

The Soulo App is available for free from the App Store on iPad orhere. Additional two-song packs are available for 99 cents through In-App Purchase.

Levine spoke about the app and why he loves it like a fat kid loves cake, to quote 50 Cent.

What is your level of involvement with this karaoke app?

I thought it was a great idea. I support the idea of karaoke and to do it that way, with an innovative app? Yes. Getting people singing is important, to help perpetuate people singing.

It's not like they are in a bar with people watching them at first. People can do it anywhere.

You can practice in the comfort of your own home. It turns the iPad into a karaoke machine.

Why did you get behind this particular app?

You can do a lot of things. There is a real diversity: You can record things, create things. It is much more creative than the other ones out there. It is a lot easier to work, and not as confusing as others on the market. You just take the vocal out and put yours in. There is a lot more to it and there a lot more options. It's really for the discerning karaoke enthusiast. I endorse things that I think are cool, based on what I like and what I can get behind.

What are Adam Levine's favorite songs to karaoke?

Al Green "Stay Together." I also like "Welcome to the Jungle" to get things going and to bring the house down. Run-D.M.C., too!

Which Run-DMC song? "My Adidas?"

I'd go with "It's Tricky." It's always a good time.

Any suggestions on karaoking "Moves Like Jagger" or "This Love?" I imagine that has to be hard, since your voice is so high!

I would say do your vocal warm ups before. It is high, it is up there. But you can do it.

Let's talk a bit about The Voice. You were already a rock star, but your role on the show helped to catapult you to the bigger national stage, on the celeb side of things.

I did it because it was a cool thing. Other things that came as a result of choosing to do the show are a surprise. I don't expect to experience [fame] on a higher level. I am pretty happy with the way it is, even if it is a little weird to experience new level of fame I was not expecting. But it's fine and I am adjusting to it. My life is not that different because of it. It has been this way consistently for me for a while.

Is there any way to tie in this karaoke app to The Voice? They sort of go hand in hand.

It is definitely a good way to finely tune your chops. I use an app on my phone to record ideas for melodies for songs. I support things like this app, since it helps you engage your creative side.

Did you ever think you'd go on a reality TV show?

I haven't watched them in the past, since I am not a big TV person. It sounds funny I am on a TV show. I don't watch TV really. And I not trying to be cool and just saying it!

Maybe some singer will use this app and become a viral video star through it?

It could launch some other celebrity for fun. I just want people to go and do it, and I want them to feel amazing after they do it, so that they keep doing it. Karaoke singing leads to car singing and now in the digital age, to YouTube.
