Adam Levine Talks About 'Sugar', Working With Dr. Luke & Proactiv

Photo by Mel Melcon of the Los Angeles Times.
Adam Levine talked with Feedzilla about his several careers in music and finance

Mikael Wood, who writes about pop music in it's ever-quickening splendor, talked with Maroon 5 front man Adam Levine about the new album, V, Levine's somewhat failing fragrance line, his K-Mart collection, Proactiv commercial, his stint on The Voice, and several of his other career paths.

Read the whole interview on Feedzilla here:

When asked about Maroon 5 working with outside writers on the album, Overexposed, and writing with Max Martin and Benny Blanco, Levine replied saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Honestly, it's a huge relief for me, because for a long time it felt like making an album was this daunting task, and I had to be at the center of it. It wasn't fun anymore."

After being asked about working with pop-sensation producer Dr. Luke on the song "Sugar", from the new album V, Adam said "The second I heard that song, I was totally blown away. It was a really cool opportunity to go in a direction that I've always wanted to go in — kind of bridging the gap between things that I love about soul and funk and Prince but also very poppy. I'd never been able to quite master that idea."

Wood also brought up the topic of Adam Levine's stint he did with acne-resolving company Proactiv. "I had horrible cystic acne all over my face when I was 14 years old. If I was one of these people who've done [a Proactiv commercial] who'd never had a zit in their life — where they had to paint one on their face — I wouldn't have done it. It wouldn't have made any sense."

Maroon 5 Gives Us Chills With New Gwen Stefani Collab, 'My Heart Is Open'

Adam Levine (left) and Gwen Stafani.
Maroon 5's "My Heart Is Open" will send shivers down your spine

One of the most heartwarming, comforting, and easy-listening songs on Maroon 5's latest album, V, is of course the Gwen Stefani assisted track "My Heart Is Open."

The song is the last track on the 11-song standard album and is the only heartwarming ballad on the album's entirety. Penned by one of this generation's most successful, yet anonymously awesome singer-songwriters and producers, Sia, this song will send shivers down your back and make the hairs on your neck stand up.

Maroon 5 exclusively streamed their new album, V, on iTunes Radio earlier this week. Listen to the new album on iTunes here: http://t.co/EyK66IvYNQ

Maroon 5's 'In Your Pocket': Is Your Girlfriend Cheating On You?

Maroon 5 performing in June 2014.
Maroon 5's song "In Your Pocket" may make you paranoid about phones

One of Maroon 5's newest songs "In Your Pocket", a cut from their latest album V, will make you paranoid the next time you see your boyfriend or girlfriend on their cell phone.

Maroon 5 has songs about lying and cheating girls, but never have they made the core idea of a song about a girl who's on their phone too much to the point of suspicion where they're possibly cheating on you. The song's lyrics spring off with "So why you spying on me for, me for / Tell me what you're looking for / This shit you're saying is so low, so low / No love, no love, no no." The track gets more intense when the lyrics continue with "So wait you think that I don't know what this is really all about / It should be really easy / If you have nothing to hide / Show me that phone in your pocket girl / Show me that phone in your pocket" and "I can't believe you looked me in the eye / And said to me had nothing to hide, yeah / Now you're dead to me, this really is goodbye."

Maroon 5's 'Sex And Candy' Is The Only 'Songs About Jane' Sounding Song On 'V'

Maroon 5.
Maroon 5's soulful cover of "Sex and Candy" will take you back to 2002

Maroon 5's upcoming fifth album, titled V, is set to drop next week and with much anticipation, iTunes Radio decided to stream the entire album today.

One of Maroon 5's extra sexy-and-smooth bonus tracks is a classic cover of alternative rock legends Marcy Playground's 1990's hit single "Sex and Candy," a cut from their self-titled album and it's the only thing on V, unfortunately, that will take you back to the good 'ole Songs About Jane days. For long-time fans (we're talking about pre-2011), the album's overall sonic range from 80's inspired pop to 90's revolutionary-influenced R&B and new jack swing sound didn't sit well with some of them. Even though album's producer list is similar to that of the band's previous studio album, Overexposed (which dropped in June of 2012), and has it's heavy hand in synthesizers and 808 drum beats, it doesn't sound like much of the band's fourth album. At all. It's pop, but not as commercially produced as Overexposed. Songs "It Was Always You", "Unkiss Me", "In Your Pocket", and even "Feelings" has much dance-pop oriented sounds in them, but wouldn't seem to fit well on top 40 or pop radio, but only because they have their own originality about them. Levine had a heavy hand in penning lyrics this time around and keyboardist and returning member Jesse Carmichael was credited as the album's executive producer which made this album extra new-sounding and fresh to the ears of eager fans.

Personal favorites include "Sugar", an extra-spectacular tune written by Levine and DJ Ammo and Cirkut that sounds like a sister-song to Prince's "I Wanna Be Your Lover", "Feelings" which is "Moves Like Jagger" revamped-and-retouched with a sexy guitar lick,  and "Animals", a solid powerhouse pop rock song in which its lyrics are comfortably awkward and easy to sing along to.

Maroon 5 Perform 'It Was Always You' For The First Time

Maroon 5 debuted "It Was Always You" live in Las Vegas at the iHeartRadio Album Party

In celebration of Maroon 5's highly anticipated new album, V, which is slated for a September 2 release, the band put on an album release party with iHeartRadio and broadcasted it live on The CW performing hits, new and old. But for the first time ever, Maroon 5 performed one of their newest cuts from V, "It Was Always You" live.

Tonight (Tues, Aug. 26), the Los Angeles pop-rockers kicked off the iHeartRadio Album Release Party, hosted by The Voice's very own Christina Grimmie, with their reggae-infused infectious pop hit "One More Night" and lead quickly in to performing their top 10 single, "Maps." Following the performance, host Elvis Duran of KIIS-FM asked front man Adam Levine what the meaning behind the band's name really is. He was quick to reply: "You'd have to ask Billy Joel." (Rewind to the time when David Letterman harassed Levine on the subject). Surprise. The band took the stage to perform three more of their biggest hits "This Love", "Daylight", and "Love Somebody." Closing out the show, Maroon 5 debuted "It Was Always You" and concluded the event with an explosive performance of "Moves Like Jagger."

Fans were left questioning why the band didn't perform the latest V cut "Animals" or even perform their softer hit "She Will Be Loved"?

Maroon 5 turned The Forum into a stir-crazy venue performing "Maps" at the VMA's

Maroon 5 channeled back to their earlier years of performing free concerts in parking lots tailgating Sheryl Crow and John Mayer by performing "Maps" outside of The Forum last night (Sun, Aug. 24) at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Last night, Maroon 5 made their star-studded debut performance on the MTV VMA's with their performance of "Maps" and untelevised performance of "One More Night." The band was not nominated for a VMA this year. In the past, the Los Angeles rock group won their first VMA for Best New Artist for the video "This Love" in 2004. "This Love" was also up for Best Group Video, however didn't take home the second moon man. In 2007, the band was nominated for Best Music Group for "Makes Me Wonder", however lost that moonman as well. In 2012, Maroon 5 was nominated for their action-packed music video for "Payphone", featuring Wiz Khalifa, and lost to boy band One Direction's video for "What Makes You Beautiful."

Next year, the band is expected to be nominated for a few Video Music Awards, especially the award for Video Of the Year for "Maps." Have you seen the video? It's amazing.

In the distance, a voice of a female can be heard in a Saloon which catches all of the coaches' attention. "She's mine," Blake Shelton says after all 4 coaches slam on their red buttons. They all run up to the Voice stage to find a contestant and host Carson Daly saying "What is this? The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, and Gwen Stefani? They're usually not like this."

It is no surprise that Maroon 5's latest hit single "Maps" finds itself sitting atop the Canadian Hot 100 songs chart for a second consecutive week after last week's domination.

However, here in the States, the pop rock band has already fell off the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 with "Maps", descending from 7-12 this week. Plus, this week, "Maps" finds itself slowly loosing its digital fame as this week is a slow donwloading week for the band. "Maps" falls 9-14 on the Digital Songs chart. However, "It Was Always You" finds itself debuting at No. 10 on the Digital Songs tally, making it Maroon 5's 8th top 10 entry.

In other news, Maroon 5's single "Maps" moves up 13-12 on the Adult Contemporary Songs chart, slides up 4-3 on the Adult Pop Songs chart, tops the Canadian Hot 100 fora 2nd week in a row, moves up 25-24 on the Dance/Mix Show Airplay Songs chart (in which Maroon 5 has previously scored 7 top 30 hits on the chart), descends 63-100 on the Japan Hot 100, stays put at No. 11 on the On-Demand Songs chart, moves up 6-5 on the Radio Songs chart, stays put at No. 6 on the Pop Songs chart, and slides down 19-26 on the Streaming Songs chart (YouTube, Spotify, Amazon, ect.)

On the Billboard Artist Hot 100, Maroon 5 find themselves falling off the top 10 slots from 9-11 this week on it's tally. Previously, the band has peaked at No. 5 on the chart.
